What sets Katie apart

The same hour, with me, wherever in the world you happen to be sitting.

  • Private one-to-one coaching — never a group, never a video you follow along to
  • Two live sessions a week, at times chosen around your week rather than a class timetable
  • A plan built for your body, your history and what you actually want to be able to do
  • Strength, mobility, balance, Pilates, yoga and restorative movement, in whatever mix the week calls for
  • Nutrition and wellness guidance woven through the coaching, included rather than added on
  • Someone who notices when something changes, and adjusts before it becomes a problem

Out here the property is the workout, and that’s the problem

Ask almost anyone in Sahtlam or Glenora how they stay fit and the answer is the land. A winter’s worth of fir, split and stacked. A gate that’s dropped again. Compost carried up a slope that has humbled better people than either of us. It’s real work, and it does count for something.

But work isn’t training. Work asks the same four things of your body, over and over, hard, with no warm-up and no plan behind it. Then it hands you a sore lower back in February and a shoulder that clicks. I’ve listened to that story from a lot of people with beautiful properties.

What actually needs to get stronger around here

Rural living is a specific physical job, and it’s worth naming what it asks for. Hips that hinge properly so your back isn’t doing the lifting. Grip that lasts longer than the load. Strength on one side at a time, because you almost never carry anything balanced. Balance on ground that slopes, is wet, and has a root in it. And the plain ability to get down onto the ground and back up again without thinking about it — which is the single skill people are quietest about losing and happiest to get back.

None of that comes from a machine circuit. It comes from being coached through movements that look like your actual life.

The drive was always the real reason

Here’s the honest version. The Valley is long. Mill Bay to Lake Cowichan is the better part of an hour if the highway is behaving, and the trainers who work seriously with people over fifty have tended to be in Nanaimo or down in Victoria. So the maths was two hours in the truck for one hour of coaching, twice a week, in the dark, in the rain, through the Malahat.

Nobody sticks with that. It isn’t a discipline problem — it’s a geography problem, and it went away the moment coaching moved to video. Your session now costs you one hour, and it starts in your own kitchen.

Training for Tzouhalem, the river and the vineyard rows

The Valley gives you good reasons to be strong. Mount Tzouhalem is a short climb with a real descent, and descending is where knees and confidence get tested. Maple Mountain is longer and steeper. The Trans Canada Trail along the Cowichan River is flat and forgiving, which makes it perfect for building volume once your legs can handle it.

So when someone in Cobble Hill tells me they want to walk the Tzouhalem cross trail in spring without their quads shaking on the way down, that becomes the plan. We work backwards from it. Step-downs, single-leg control, calves, and enough patience to build a base first. Same with the person in Maple Bay who wants to be steady on a dock, or the one in Crofton who wants to keep working the vineyard rows through harvest.

The warmest place in Canada still has a February

Everyone quotes the annual mean, and it’s true — this is the mildest patch of the country. What that statistic doesn’t tell you is how grey and wet a Duncan January feels, and how easily a training habit dies in it. Summer takes care of itself here. People are outside constantly.

The months that matter are the ones where the walk gets skipped. Having a set time twice a week, with someone waiting on the other end of the call, is what carries most people through the stretch where motivation quietly leaves the building. I’ll be there. That turns out to be most of it.

Two of you on the same piece of land

A lot of Valley households are a pair of people looking after a property together, and training together suits them. Same call, same hour, two different sets of instructions — because one of you has a cranky knee and the other has a shoulder from thirty years of a particular job.

You’d be surprised how much easier consistency gets when the other person is already logged on.

Cowichan Valley — your questions

Do you come out to Duncan or Chemainus to train people?

No. Every session I run happens over video, and that's the whole design of my practice rather than a compromise. You set a tablet or laptop up in the living room, we talk, I watch you move and I coach you through it. Nobody drives anywhere.

I live on five acres. Can training really help with the property?

That's often exactly what we build toward. Splitting, stacking, fencing, hauling and gardening all lean on the same handful of things: hips that hinge, a trunk that holds position, one-sided carrying strength and the confidence to work on ground that isn't level. We train those on purpose so your property stops being the only thing training you.

What equipment do I need at my place?

Less than you'd think. A sturdy chair, a bit of floor, somewhere to hold on. Most Valley homes already have a set of dumbbells in the shop or a couple of bands in a drawer, and I'll work with whatever's there before I ever suggest you buy something. If it turns out you need one more piece, I'll tell you which and why.

How often would we train together?

Twice a week is the shape of it, usually starting with about twelve weeks so there's time for real progress rather than a burst of enthusiasm. From there most people carry on into an ongoing coaching relationship. The training changes as you do — that's rather the point of having a coach instead of a program.
