SIDNEY BY THE SEA

Online personal training in Sidney, BC

Private online coaching for adults 50+ in Sidney, built around the boats, the gardens, the waterfront walk and the trips you have already booked.

A small seaside town waterfront with open sky

What sets Katie apart

The same hour, with me, wherever in the world you happen to be sitting.

  • Private one-to-one coaching — never a group, never a video you follow along to
  • Two live sessions a week, at times chosen around your week rather than a class timetable
  • A plan built for your body, your history and what you actually want to be able to do
  • Strength, mobility, balance, Pilates, yoga and restorative movement, in whatever mix the week calls for
  • Nutrition and wellness guidance woven through the coaching, included rather than added on
  • Someone who notices when something changes, and adjusts before it becomes a problem

A town that already knows what it wants to keep doing

Sidney has a distinct rhythm to it. Beacon Avenue on a Tuesday morning is properly busy — the bakery queue, the bookshops, people who have clearly been up and out for two hours already. A large share of this town has finished with full-time work and has no intention whatsoever of slowing down. That changes what training is for.

People who get in touch about this are rarely chasing a number on a scale. They want to lift a suitcase into an overhead bin without a second thought. They want to still be riding the Lochside in ten years. They want to get down into the boat and back out of it without the small hesitation that has started to creep in.

The waterfront walk is doing less than you think

Almost everyone here walks. The path along the water from the pier round toward Tulista is one of the best flat walks on the Island and people do it religiously, in all weather, often twice a day.

Now the honest part. Walking maintains. It does not build. If you have been covering five kilometres a day for years and the recycling bin still feels awkward, or the stairs up from the driveway have become more of an event than they used to be, that is not a mystery and it is certainly not a character flaw. You have been doing one thing well and a different thing not at all. Strength has to be asked for on purpose. That is most of what I do.

Travel is a physical event, and here it’s the whole point

You live minutes from the airport and not much further from the ferries. Travel is not an abstraction in this town — it is the calendar.

And it is physical. It is the gangway at low tide, forty minutes standing in a queue with a bag on one shoulder, hoisting a case onto a rack in a country where nobody is coming over to help. People book a trip a year out and then quietly worry about that part without telling anyone. Train for it and it stops being the thing you worry about. Grip, single-leg balance, loaded carries, getting up off a low seat repeatedly. We can name the trip, put it on the calendar, and work backwards from it.

Boats, gardens, and the awkward positions nobody trains for

Half the driveways around Deep Cove and North Saanich have something on a trailer. Down at the marinas, the strain almost never comes from the sailing. It comes from the loading and the unloading — kneeling on a dock, twisting over a gunwale with something heavy, hauling a hose across a garden.

Same story with the gardens. They are small here, and small gardens still ask an enormous amount of hips and spines. Forty minutes bent over a raised bed in April, and a back that declines to forgive it in May.

So I ask what you actually do in a week, and then we train those shapes. Kneeling and getting back up. Rotating under load. Carrying something heavy in one hand. It is far less abstract than most people expect.

Why doing this from home suits Sidney in particular

Sidney is small, which is most of its charm. It also means the options are the options — a couple of good places, a class timetable that may or may not contain anything pitched at you, and after that you are driving into Saanich or town.

The drive is not really the barrier. The barrier is that the appointment is somewhere else at all. At half past four in February, in the rain, with the Pat Bay slowing down, the session that gets skipped is the one that needed a car. Take the car out of it and consistency stops depending on the weather.

Who you’d be working with

I have been coaching for more than 25 years, eighteen of those in my own practice. My degree is in kinesiology from McMaster, and while I was there I was the lead volunteer running the cardiac rehabilitation centre, working with adults roughly 50 to 80. I am also a Certified Holistic Nutritionist, so food, energy and habits are part of the ordinary conversation rather than a separate thing you have to buy.

What starting looks like

Two live sessions a week. Most people begin with about twelve weeks and then simply carry on — several of my coaching relationships have run five, ten and fifteen years, which tells you more about how this works than any promise I could make.

The way in is a fifteen-minute call. After that, a first session that costs you nothing, because an hour of being properly coached answers the question in a way that no amount of reading about it ever will. If we turn out not to suit each other, you have still learned something worth knowing.

Training in Sidney — questions

Do you actually train people in Sidney, or is it all online?

All of it is online, and that is the design rather than a compromise. I coach live over video, one to one, so you and I are talking the whole hour — I can see what your left hip is doing on the third set and say something about it before it becomes a sore back. Nobody drives anywhere. Sidney people ask this a lot, usually expecting the answer to be a downgrade.

I walk the waterfront every day. Isn't that enough on its own?

Walking is genuinely good for you and I would never talk you out of it. It just does one job. Walking keeps your heart and your habit going; it does very little for the strength you need to carry a case up a flight of stairs or push yourself up off a low dock. Those need load, and load has to be trained deliberately. Keep the walk. Add the other thing.

I'm away for weeks at a time. Does that wreck the plan?

No, and it is one of the first questions I get asked around here. The coaching travels with you, because the only fixed piece is a screen and a bit of floor. A rented condo somewhere warm, a spare room at your daughter's place, a hotel with nothing in it but a chair — we work with whatever the room gives us. Long absences get planned for rather than apologised for.

What do I need to have at home before we start?

Less than you think. A clear patch of floor, a sturdy chair, and a laptop or tablet you can angle toward you. Early on, your own body weight and that chair will keep you plenty busy. If we later decide a couple of bands or a set of dumbbells would open things up, I will tell you exactly what to get and nothing else.
